Next March another ’90s property will debut in theaters for fans to experience the new generation of Power Rangers!
The Comic Con crowd on Saturday were treated to a panel of the new rangers and an advanced look at the teaser trailer, which earned a standing ovation.
The panelists who were director Dean Israelite and the five rangers: Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Becky G, and Naomi Scott. Presenting the teaser trailer via video message was Elizabeth Banks, who will play Rita Repulsa in the upcoming film.
The stars didn’t divulge many details in regards to the film itself, but shared what it was like stepping into the uniforms, developing a good chemistry among each other, and their time in the Zords, which were giant fighting robots each ranger controlled back in the past Television shows and films. Becky G, who plays Trini the Yellow Ranger was scared for her life “I remember being in that thing all day and being scared to death because the huge crane operating it would make all sudden twists and turns. Dean found me praying.”
Dean Israelite, who directed the feature, remembers what the 90s show represented and felt obligated to bring back that sense of joy and emotion to the film. He promised throwbacks to the old shows as well with old characters like Zordon (Bryan Cranston) and Alpha 5 (Bill Hader).
The trailer gave us some details with the story as a group of teenagers from Angel Grove come across a ship in a desolate area. After coming in contact with the entity they all experience a powerful change. Some shots of increased speed, strength and agility and a chilling line from Rita Repulsa saying “I’ve killed Rangers before.”
You get a sense that they went for a darker tone this time around that still has comedic beats. The film resembles the story of Max Landis’ Chronicle which is an interesting route for the movie to go in. Overall it was an impressive first look at the new Power Rangers.
